The definition of metabolic syndrome has many versions depend on the experts. But commonly, it is defined as combination of medical disorders which lead to cardiovascular disorders and diabetes. In other words, the syndrome is a package of high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high blood cholesterol levels and the keep increasing belly fat or waist size. Just see the definition and you will know what diseases it will lead to - the heart disease, strokes, peripheral vascular disease and diabetes.
Why this situation is using the 'metabolic' term? 'Metabolic' actually refers to the biochemical processes, and become dangerous when they involve (interrupting) in human body's normal functions. This situation creates the risk factors which are the behaviors or conditions that weaken the body immune and later the body becomes fragile to several diseases.
The relationship between metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disorders was found in the 1940s, and later became more obvious in 1980s' studies. Metabolic syndrome is also known as the syndrome X or dysmetabolic syndrome, but usually the medical report and press only use the term 'metabolic syndrome'.
There are three basic causes of this syndrome - the obesity, physical activity and genetic factors. Since the definition of the syndrome only emphasizes on 'medical disorders' with the cardiovascular disorders and diabetes as the results, it will be too late when it comes to the severe diseases. Here are some common symptoms to help you recognize the metabolic syndrome in the early stage, so you can avoid the severe diseases yet to come. These symptoms are abdominal obesity, atherogenic dyslipidemia, raised blood pressure (hypertension), insulin resistance, prothrombotic state and proinflammatory state.
The experts' definitions of metabolic syndrome
For more precise and understood-able definitions of metabolic syndrome, it is better to consult with the experts' opinions.
1. According to the guidelines from the 2001 National Cholesterol Education Program for Adult Treatment Panel (ATP III), the symptoms which indicate the metabolic syndrome are: abdominal obesity with waist size over 102 cm (40 inches) for men and over 88 cm (35 inches) for women, the Triglycerides of 150mg/dl or more, the HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) of 40mg/dl or lower for men and 50mg/dl or lower for women, the blood pressure of 130/85 or more, and the fasting blood glucose of 100-110 mg/dl or above.
2. According to World Health Organization (WHO), the symptoms of metabolic syndrome are: the 'high insulin levels' means an increasing fasting blood glucose or post meal glucose, the abdominal obesity in which the waist to hip ratio is greater than 0.9 and the body mass index of at least 30 kg/m2 with a waist measurement over 37 inches, the Triglyceride level of at least 150 mg/dl or HDL cholesterol (the good Cholesterol) lower than 35 mg/dl, and the blood pressure of 140/90 or above.
The ATP III's version has five symptoms, while WHO's four symptoms. But any three symptoms of each version occur in one human, it is already a definite verdict of suffering a metabolic syndrome.
