Using Optimum Nutrition Creatine Can Help You Get Optimum Results From Your Workouts

Creatine has been a very popular supplement with athletes and bodybuilders for a number of years now and optimum nutrition creatine is one of the best options on the market, getting a lot of very positive reviews. This supplement plays a significant role in supplying our muscles with energy, especially during short bursts of intense activity. Many athletes and bodybuilders will tell you that when using it they are able to complete more repetitions during their training and recover from a strenuous workout in a shorter period of time.

When your muscles need energy to perform physical action they get this energy from ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Creatine is a naturally occurring substance that is produced by our bodies and can also be found in some protein rich foods such as meat or fish. It helps replenish ATP so that your muscles will have the energy they need for intense exercise. It is believed that creatine aids in building muscle mass and reducing recovery time, which is why it is such a popular supplement.

Optimum nutrition creatine is one of the brands that is getting the best reviews from customers that have actually used it. People have stated that they have seen noticeable gains in their muscle size and feel like their workouts are more effective after using the product for just two weeks. Other people report that it takes longer for them to "hit the wall" during a workout. A lot of the people that have used the optimum nutrition product say that they have tried several other products but the one from optimum nutrition is far superior and is the first one that they have seen noticeable results with.

Optimum nutrition creatine uses a patented production method that results in an odorless and tasteless powder that mixes easily into water or juice. The powder dissolves completely and does not settle to the bottom so you won't have the gritty taste or texture that you may get with some other products. It can also be easily mixed into a protein shake. Some people like to mix it with a sports drink that will provide the simple carbohydrates needed to aid in the delivery of the creatine to the muscles.

Each serving supplies a full 5 grams of creatine to give your muscles the energy they need to complete more repetitions, increase muscle mass, reduce recovery time, and increase the overall effectiveness of your workouts.

What Does Creatine Do in Your Body?

If you regularly workout at the gym to build muscle mass and increase strength, you no doubt pay a lot of attention to what you put into your body. You likely pay attention to how much water you drink each day, make sure you eat a balanced diet, and you may even take a supplement or be considering the option of taking a supplement to make your workouts more effective. Creatine is among the most popular and most effective supplements available today. However, you likely want to know more about this supplement. So what does creatine do in your body?

In order to understand exactly what does creatine do in your body, you need to know that this supplement is actually naturally found in small amounts in the foods you eat such as meats and fish. When you eat these foods, this substance is stored in small amounts in your body, largely in your muscles. Your muscles use this substance to produce another substance called ATP. ATP is what helps your muscles get the energy for those short but intensive bursts that you need during a workout

If you ingest creatine naturally in your food, why do you need to take more in the form of a supplement? The foods that you eat offer you only small amounts of supplement. When you workout regularly, your natural stores of this substance are used up quickly and you do need to replenish your stores.

You likely want to know what does creatine do in your body that helps you build muscle mass and increase strength. You understand now that it offers your body what it needs to give you short, intensive bursts of energy. When you take a supplement after you workout, and especially if your supplement is taken within about thirty minutes of completing your workout and in combination with protein and carb sources, your body will use these resources to replenish the creatine that was used during your workout. The result is that your body will actually build up muscle mass and increase strength at a far faster rate than it otherwise would. Some people do take this supplement before a workout, and there is some benefit to taking the supplement at this time. However, research has proven that you will enjoy optimal results from your workout if the supplement is taken shortly after a workout, with the exception being if your body's stores of creatine are drastically depleted and need to be replenished prior to the workout.

It only makes sense that you would want to know what does creatine do inside your body that aids in muscle building and strength building. You spend a lot of time working out on a regular basis, and you want do what you can to maximize the benefits of your workouts. Yet you also want to make sure the supplement you are thinking of taking or are taking is the most effective and safest option possible. Now that you know more about creatine, you understand how it works inside your body to give you safe, effective results.

Natural bodybuilding supplements, you should know I 5

Forget all the hype and the most recent of the new pills to get a big power and go back to basics. The purpose of all of us to be stronger and to improve our bodies. Although the media has led us astray with false promises of what the next big pill will, back to basics. Safe lifting and strong, eat well and sleep well.

While the water is not really a supplement, it is of great importance. Many of us are not sufficient and it shows. Headaches, fatigue, loss ofthe strength and confusion are signs that our consumption of water is very low. Our body needs water to keep cool and remove debris and provide a basis for many chemical reactions of metabolism place.

Protein-protein must be consumed to get the essential amino acid in our body. The 8 essential amino acids can not be produced by our body, but are necessary to create all the proteins in our bodies to use. Much of our body is composed of proteins, the nails of the toes to the muscles are trying very hard to grow, all made of protein. As a large carnivore can be difficult for the body, while many protein supplements are absorbed faster with little damage. Jut remember to drink plenty of water to keep the kidneys flushed.

Creatine Another good option for natural bodybuilders. Creatine is found naturally in the body, 95% are found in skeletal muscle. One of its functions in the body is the transport of phosphate in the conversion of ADP to ATP. Remember that chemistry?> ATP is the fuel cell body. ATP is the molecular form of energy the body uses. When a muscle does not work, the ATP is consumed and converted into ADP, phosphate and then leads a phosphocreatine ATP once again.

Multivitamin-During the hard training will deplete your body of many vitamins and minerals. Through the body's natural metabolism, vitamins are used. That is above average, is about to go through such aquickly. Minerals are used to transport nutrients, making the bones and the various chemical reactions necessary to maintain the health and growth of the body.

Fiber-Do not laugh, how to eat salad and take a fiber supplement. As mentioned above, many of us do not drink enough water to begin with, what's more, if you have a diet rich in meat department that will help more than you think. Insoluble fiber acts like an SOS pad to scrub the 'inside of your intestines, helping to keep free of irritants and breeding ground for bacteria so kind. Colon cancer is a murderess! Soluble fiber has been shown to promote the health of the heart and arteries. And 'necessary to maintain the pump and healthy blood vessels to supply oxygen and nutrients to the body.

These are just a small list of 5 important that we all have to take supplements. Yes, there are many, many more. Let's start with the basics and build from there.

The Future Of Anti-Aging Therapies by Dr. Dima

Is it possible to reduce the gap between chronological age and biological age? By definition, does aging have to imply chronic disease, suffering, dementia, frailty and debilitation? Could it be possible to live to 110 years of age and still be out and about with the energy to enjoy our great grandchildren without collapsing from shortness of breath or a fractured hip? That is what longevity medicine is all about. It is not about achieving immortality and it is certainly not about looking 21 when you are 92. It is, however, about taking advantage of medical breakthroughs to live a healthy, vigorous life as long as we possibly can. This article will begin by giving a brief overview of the current theories of aging and will conclude with the latest trends in anti-aging research. Let us redefine the term "aging gracefully" to "aging gracefully and healthfully." Brief review of the causes of aging There are many current theories on aging. Some of the major focus on aging has been placed on the eventual destruction or damage of DNA by oxidation. One such theory is the Telomerase Theory, which proposes that cells lose their ability to replicate appropriately. As this continues, cells become more and more damaged and the cumulative effect is cellular dysfunction, which is commonly known as "aging". Telomeres are the unique sequence of nucleic acids or "the building blocks of life" that are a vital part of our genetic makeup. So what if we could fix the telomeres or prevent them from breaking down? Well, we would essentially be able to reverse the natural aging process. The person who figures this out will surely be a Nobel laureate. What contributes to DNA damage? Oxidation, toxins such as tobacco smoke, pollution, certain disease states such as diabetes, which leads to glycosylation and even states of extreme stress, contribute to DNA damage while potentially accelerating the aging process of our skin and body. Why stress? Our bodies produce excessive cortisol when in states of stress and the levels increase with normal aging. In excess, it is commonly believed that cortisol plays a significant role in damaging the hypothalamus, a key neuroendocrine organ in the brain. As such, it would seem logical to reverse or stop the aging process at a hormonal level, either by reducing the amount of excessive cortisol production or by finding a safe way to keep the hypothalamus functioning appropriately. Likewise bio-chemically, our molecules like to remain "in a state of balance." When they are not in balance, molecules tend to find that balance by stealing electrons from other molecules. This is known as the Free Radical Theory Of Aging. However, as humans we generate free radicals all the time as a result of ATP or energy production in the mitochondria. So how can something essential to our survival be bad for us? There are different levels of free radicals resulting in different levels of damage. The idea is to control as much as possible, the production of the bad free radicals within our bodies. Limiting free radical damage also ties in with the theory that we increase cellular damage by excessive consumption of calories. Since we need energy to burn calories and the production of energy leads to free radical formation, it follows that limiting caloric intake would result in extending the lifespan of a cell. Thus, maintaining the efficiency of the energy storehouses of our cells -- the mitochondria, is also essential to preventing premature aging. Finally, the Lipid Membrane Theory Of Aging states that our cell membrane loses water and lipids as we age and gains lipofuscin. This is a toxin and its accumulation leads to premature cell damage and the inability of the cell to function optimally. Similarly, the Glycolsylation Theory states that excessive amounts of glucose causes cellular damage resulting in end organ damage. Uncontrolled diabetics, for example, have up to 75% more glycolsylated proteins than normal individuals. These cross-linked proteins cannot function efficiently and result in more heart, kidney and circulatory problems for diabetics, thus greatly shortening their lifespan. It is important to keep in mind that all these theories are inter-related and it is likely a combination of the above that leads to premature aging and cell damage. Anti-Aging Remedies What can be done to potentially reverse and prevent these challenging aging processes, so that we can live a more healthy life? There are the obvious solutions: smoking cessation, exercise and dietary modification. However, we cannot entirely avoid damaging pollutants that surround us within the environment and the presence of chemicals in our foods. However, there are things we can start doing today (and this is by no means a comprehensive list): 1. Take Anti-Oxidants: A basic anti-oxidant program should include a multi-mineral supplement, a multivitamin with folic acid and additionally Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Alpha Lipoic Acid and Coenzyme Q10. 2. Take other nutraceutical supplements, under the advice and care of an anti-aging physician, to meet your specific needs. For example, both women and men should take estrogen blockers, natural hormone replacements including estrogen, progesterone and testosterone, yet in varying and individualized amounts. Make sure your physician includes hormone levels as part of your prevention workup, especially if you are over 45. 3. Utilize substances that give natural protection against cancer, which include: laetrile cream, estrogen blockers such as DIM, thymus and reservatrol. 4. Take substances that will prevent free radical damage and enhance mitochondrial production: These can include Acetyl-L-Carnitine and Aminoguanidine, Carnosine and even melatonin. 5. Maintain circulatory health by taking reservatrol, aminoguanidine and vitamin E. 6. Piracetam, hydergine, hydergine, gerovital-H3, deprenyl and vincopotene, acetyl- L-Carnitine all play a role in improving brain function and oxygenation. 7. DHEA and pregnenolone aid in excessive cortisol and more effective hormone production. 8. Use sunscreen protection: With regard to aging of the skin, sun protection is the key to anti-aging and it is very cost effective. A sunscreen with UVA/UVA and an SPF of 30 or higher is essential. 9. In addition to oral supplements there are many excellent antioxidants that can be used topically. These include, Co-Enzyme Q10, Alpha Lipoic Acid, DMAE, Vitamin E, pycnogenol, vitamin A, vitamin C, carnosine, even estrogen creams. Some work by preventing free radical damage and others help to promote new collagen formation in the skin. 10. Get screened for diabetes, cancer, heart disease and osteoporosis. Early detection and prevention is the cornerstone to longevity. 11. Discuss decreased libido and sexual function with your doctor. The ability to maintain sexual performance is a definite gauge of health and longevity. 12. Don't stress. The mind-body connection is a powerful tool in medicine, healing and longevity. Anti-Aging = Becoming Ageless? Anti-Aging Medicine is not about achieving an ageless society. It is not "pseudoscientific hype about miracle cures," "virtual immortality," or the secret to the "fountain of youth" (these are all descriptives given to the anti-aging medical field by the biogerontological establishment, fearing that their disease based research will be threatened when, in fact, it will be enhanced). It is, however, about learning what can be done to live a long, healthful, more productive life. It is about focusing on disease detection and prevention rather than the treatment of symptoms of age-related chronic disease. It is a clinical medical specialty based on innovative, peer reviewed scientific research and a sensible model of preventive medical care. Consider these facts: 1. The 85 and older age group has more than tripled since 1970. 2. The number of Americans aged 100 and over has increased by 35% in the last decade. 3. It is projected that by the year 2030, 1 in 5 Americans will be age 65 and older. 4. The leading causes of death in the U.S. are heart disease, cancer and stroke. The bottom line is that with rapid advances in high-tech medical treatments we are all going to live longer, whether we like it or not. We have a choice in how we choose to live the latter part of our lives. Given the choice between spending the last years of my life debilitated and in a nursing home with 3 or more chronic diseases of aging being managed by the traditional polypharmaceutical approach vs. leading a vigorous, productive life well into my 90s, the choice is a no-brainer. Today, the average American consumer is realizing this. Here are some basic facts about the anti-aging marketplace: 60% of Americans age 65 and older are taking some form of hormone supplementation and dietary supplementation. In this estimated $30 billion industry, sales of anti-aging supplements are estimated at $1billion in the United States alone. If we eliminated the top 3 chronic diseases (heart disease, cancer and stroke) trillions of US dollars could be reinvested in furthering longevity research (or gerontological research if that term offends you). What does the Anti-Aging Medical Model include? What can you expect from an anti-aging evaluation and treatment plan? This may include:

Djokovic wins the Rafa Slam

World No.1 Rafael Nadal was hoping to clinch a Non-Calendar Year Grand Slam in Australia, but Novak Djokovic had other plans.
The main attraction for first Grand Slam of the year was probably the possibility of witnessing Spaniard Rafael Nadal completing his first Non-Calendar Year Grand Slam in Melbourne, Australia. After his successful appearances in 2010 at the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open -winning the three of them-, the Australian Open was Nadal's next target for 2011. The excitement from the fans and media was such that they even came up with a name to honor the World No. 1's achievement of winning four Majors in a row, which they began to call the "Rafa Slam".
Unfortunately for Nadal an injury added to the good tennis played by his countryman David Ferrer in the quarter finals where going to put and end to the "Rafa Slam". With the No. 1 seed and 2009 champion off the way, all eyes were now on the defending champion, the Swiss Roger Federer, who was after his fifth title (2004, 2006, 2007 and 2010) in Melbourne.
Federer had a smooth trip into the semifinals, as his countryman Stanislas Wawrinka (seed 19) was never a threat for him in the quarterfinals, and easily won the match in straights sets of 6-1, 6-3, 6-3.  In the semifinals an old rival was awaiting for him: Serbian Novak Djokovic, in a rematch of the 2008 semifinals, which was won by Djokovic and led him into his career first Grand Slam title.
Their most recent confrontation had taken place at the 2010 US Open -in the semifinals as well- in an epic match that went until the last of five sets to be decided in favor of Djokovic. This time three sets where going to be enough for the Serbian to defeat the Swiss for the seventh time (Federer has won 13) in his career, and win a berth for the final against the Scottish Andy Murray.
Djokovic arrived to the decisive game at Melbourne Park with the boost of having eliminated the defending champion and having lost only one set throughout the tournament. Before Federer, he had left behind Spaniard Marcel Granollers, Croatian Ivan Dodig, Serbian Viktor Troicki, Spaniard Nicolas Almagro and Czech Thomas Berdych. Now the only obstacle in between him and his second Australian Open trophy was Murray, but not for long, as he defeated the Scottish in straight sets of 6–4, 6–2, 6–3.
The Serbian feels more mature and confident about his game this year, and he attributed the bad moments in his career to personal issues that he used to bring to the court. But now he claims that he has been successful in separating his private life from his professional one, and feels that this is being reflected in his game.
With this result Djokovic gets closer to the second place in the ATP World Tour Raking, which belongs to Federer with 7.965 points for an 85 point difference between them. If he continues to play with the same accuracy and mental strength as he displayed in the Australian Open, his chances of improving that third place in the ranking will surely be increased.

High Blood Pressure Treatment by Drugs, Lifestyle Changes and Natural Remedies

High blood pressure (hypertension) is one of the most common diseases affecting the western world. High blood pressure is usually symptomless whilst slowly damaging the eyes, brain, and kidneys. Many governments have initiated policies to raise public awareness. The aim of this article is to give the person suffering (or who may be suffering) hypertension some knowledge about the condition enabling them to make objective decisions regarding their treatment.

High blood pressure appears not to have a clear-cut cause. It is more common in people who smoke, drink excessive alcohol, are overweight, and are sedentary. However, non-smoking teetotal athletes can suffer from hypertension. Certain ethnic groups have a very high incidence of high blood pressure, with research not revealing any reasons for this.

Drugs (Pharmaceuticals) To Treat High Blood Pressure

ACE (Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme) Inhibitirs: enalapril maleate, captopril, quinapril, lisinopril, amongst others.
Function: to block an enzyme in the bloodstream that produces angiotensin II, a chemical that raises blood pressure by constricting blood vessels.
Side effects: long-term cough, acute swelling of face, lips, and throat.

Angiotensin II Blockers: candesartan, irbesartan, losartan potassium, valasartan.
Function: to block the effect of angiotensin.
Side effects: are rare.

Alpha Blockers: clonidine, prasozin, doxazosin, terazosin.
Function: to chemically block responses to stressors that causeraised blood pressure and heart rate.
Side effects: dry mouth, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, impaired sexual function. Alpha blockers can precipitate dramatic increase in blood pressure treatment if suddenly discontinued.

Beta Blockers: propranolol, betaxolol, carvedilol, atenolol, metoprolol, labetolol.
Function: to block chemical processes that lead to increased heart pressure and heart rate. Often given after a heart attack.
Side effects: tiredness, excessively slow heart rate, impaired sexual functioning. Beta blockers can precipitate dramatic increase in blood pressure if suddenly discontinued.

Calcium-Channel Blockers: amolodipine besylate, diltiazem, verapamil, nifedipine.
Function: to relax blood vessel walls to make them dilate (expand), lowering blood pressure.
Side effects: are constipation, dizziness, nausea, fluid retention.

Diuretics: bendrofluazide, bumetanide, cyclopenthiazide, frusemide, hydrochlorothiazide, indapamide, metolazone, mefruside.
Function: is to stimulate kidneys to excrete more salt and water, lowering blood volume and blood pressure.
Side effects: are low levels of potassium and magnesium, elevations in uric acid, increases in blood cholesterol.

Hypertension Friendly Lifestyle

Hypertension has been shown to be related to many causes. So a change in lifestyle, other than one single thing, often helps someone lower their blood pressure. Three things that research throws up again and again is that people who drink to excess, smoke and are overweight are at a much higher risk of developing high blood pressure. If you eat fewer calories yo will soon start to lose weight, just don't expect to be as thin as Lance Armstrong in two weeks! For the heavy drinker cutting down on alcohol consumption can have many benefits, it will help lower your blood pressure, it will help you lose weight, and it will save you a fortune. Smoking has, for many decades, been known to be generally bad for health. The reason it raises blood pressure is that it causes a constriction (narrowing) of the arteries. If you really can't stop smoking, at least cut down. Research indicates that eating 'empty' calories (refined carbohydrates, sugar, sugary drinks,'junk' food) can be a cause of high blood pressure and contribute to being overweight. Try eating high-fiber foods such as whole grains and raw vegetables. Fibre makes you feel full, so in turn you may actually eat less and lose weight. Eating deep-sea (cold water) fish rich in essential fatty acids (EFA's) such as mackeral, cod tuna, and salmon have been shown to help with blood pressure. It is thought that the omega-3 fatty acid in these relax artery walls and make blood thinner. Eat foods rich in magnesium, potassium, and calcium such as nuts and seeds, green leafy vegetables, whole grains, legumes, amongst others. One area that every professional agrees upon is that engaging in regular aerobic exercise for 30 minutes 3 times per week will help lower blood pressure.

Natural Remedies To Treat High Blood Pressure

Dandelion: Taraxacum officinale: is a popular remedy for fluid retention. By increasing urine flow dandelion also helps lower blood pressure. Dandelion benefits from not causing potassium loss, which pharmaceutical diuretics usually do. Make sure that if you use dandelion leaves that they have not been treated with pesticides.

Garlic: Allium sativum: has been used for 1,000's of years for many conditions. To get the best from garlic, 3 cloves should be eaten raw everyday. The same effect can be achieved by taking garlic gel capsules.

Reishi: Ganoderma lucidum: is a mushroom. Scientific studies have shown that reishi lowers blood pressure. The mushroom itself is nearly inedible and is usually taken in capsule form.

Hawthorn: Crataegus spp: lowers blood pressure by relaxing and dilating artery walls. Hawthorn can take many weeks or months to show any effect.

Hypercet: is a proprietary blend of many natural ingredients including the following active ingredients. Calcium A recent article by Christopher Ott describes the many ways calcium protects your health, including the role it plays in protecting your heart.

Gene Spiller, PhD, the Director of the Health Research and Studies Center says, "In fact, your calcium intake may be almost as important to blood pressure as your sodium intake," He is co-author of Calcium: Nature's Versatile Mineral (Avery, 2000)

Spiller also said, "An adequate supply of calcium helps muscles-including your heart muscle-do their work of contracting and relaxing. Calcium also appears to help your nervous system regulate the level of pressure in your arteries."

Calcium is a naturally occurring mineral with no known side effects.
Magnesium
is the fourth most abundant mineral in the body, and is essential to good health.

A diet high in green leafy vegetables such as spinach, whole grains, nuts, and some legumes supplies magnesium. Tap water can be a good source, if the water is "hard." "Soft" water contains fewer minerals.

Magnesium is a naturally occurring mineral with no known side effects

Malic Acid
"An apple a day keeps the doctor away." There's more truth in that old saying than you might think. Malic acid is derived from tart apples and grapes, and is an essential part of the magnesium support team.

Malic acid is an important part of the Krebs cycle, a series of chemical reactions carried out in the living cell, and is used by the body to increase ATP, an enzyme that supports muscle health, reduces muscle stress, and assists to improve energy levels in the body. Malic Acid is a naturally occurring substance with no known side effects.

Citric acid, although acid in its fresh form (lemon and limes) transforms during metabolism into alkali. This is helpful to your blood. Our American diet tends to be overly acidic from coffee, sodas, alcohol, and certain proteins. An acidic condition tends to be more inflammatory. Citric acid is essential to the Krebs cycle, Citric acid, together with malic acid, are involved with complex chemical actions, resulting in the production of carbon dioxide, and its removal from the cells. Citric acid is also used as a natural preservative to maintain freshness of many products, and serves this role, as well, in the Hypercet BPF. Citric Acid is a naturally occurring substance with no known side effects.

Glycine is a non-essential amino acid found naturally in beans, brewer's yeast, dairy products, meat, seafood, nuts and whole grains. It's involved in the production of glucose in the liver. Glycine is plays an important role in supporting healthy blood in your body. It is involved in the manufacture of nitrogen to process many other amino acids, and usefulin the processing of hemoglobin, glutathione, DNA, and RNA. It helps with brain function, and is important for a healthy prostate gland. Glycine is a naturally occurring substance with no known side effects.

It has been shown that there can be many causes of high blood pressure, not just one. Treatment is similar in that a lifestyle switch is usually better than a pharmaceutical cure. For the non-smoking, teetotal athlete who suffers hypertension the pharmaceutical may be the only way left open. For the rest of us who may be a little overweight, drink a little too much (I include myself in this group!), or smoke, have options available. Take some natural remedies, take a little more exercise, eat a little healthier, cut back on the cigarettes, and cut back on the booze. Try to change one thing at a time, within a few months your lifestyle could be dramatically more blood pressure friendly.

The reader who suffers with high blood pressure should now have some more knowledge about their condition and the different therapies available to them, enabling them to make objective choices in their own treatment.

Automating MS Excel Using Visual Studio.NET

Introduction

I have written this article to address requests I have been getting through e-mail on how to automate MS Excel. Most people who are looking at this article might also be interested at the following articles for automating MS Word documents. Here is the link for Automating MS Word using C#, and here is the link for Automating MS Word using C++.

Back to the main subject, there are many spreadsheets in the business world, and more and more of them are being created and sometimes used in ways that simply Excel was not designed for, for instance storing sensitive and crucial data for laboratories and etc...

To start with, this article will not get into the very advanced automations available in Excel, but it will give a framework that hopefully can be used by others to improve on and make it more expansible. The framework will allow you to create an Excel object and control some of the basic functionalities such as getting worksheet information and extracting data from the worksheet given a range.

The program that I had to develop has a larger scope, I will just be concentrating on the Excel portion. But there are a few neat classes which I developed for file system navigation using threads. If there is enough request for such an article, or if I get a chance to do it, I will go ahead and post it. In the meantime I hope that the following article benefits you.

Background

Having enough understanding of OOP and familiarity with the C# language.

Using the code

I will provide the Excel wrapper class that can be used in your project. The code will be discussed below. I will not get too much into the Excel object model, first because it is a huge task, and second because there is already documentation done by Microsoft. Before we start, here is a quick start for beginners who need to know how to setup an Office Automation project:

Create a new project, for simplicity, create a Windows application, go ahead and right click on References in the Solution Explorer, and select Add Reference... When the Add Reference window comes up, select the COM tab. This will list all Component names which are available on your machine. Since we are going to use MS Excel, you will scroll down until you find: Microsoft Excel 11.0 Object Library.

Note: Yours might be a different version depending on the version of Office installed on your machine. This is for MS Excel 2003.

using System;

using System.IO;

using System.Collections;

using System.Threading;

using Office = Microsoft.Office.Core;

using Excel = Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel;

using System.Diagnostics;

namespace ATPMain

{

///

/// Project: Code Project Demo

/// Author: Vahe Karamian

/// Date: 03/01/2005

/// Version: 1.0

///

public class VkExcel

{

private Excel.Application excelApp = null;

private Excel.Workbook excelWorkbook = null;

private Excel.Sheets excelSheets = null;

private Excel.Worksheet excelWorksheet = null;

...
using Office = Microsoft.Office.Core;

using Excel = Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel;

You will need to include these two so you can use the Excel object in your code. So we need to have an Excel.Application object, Excel.Workbook object, Excel.Sheets object, and Excel.Worksheet object. These object will be used to control and extract data from Excel. So we declare the following variables to represent the mentioned objects: excelApp, excelWorkbook, excelSheets, and excelWorksheet.

....

private static object vk_missing = System.Reflection.Missing.Value;

private static object vk_visible = true;

private static object vk_false = false;

private static object vk_true = true;

private bool vk_app_visible = false;

private object vk_filename;

#region OPEN WORKBOOK VARIABLES

private object vk_update_links = 0;

private object vk_read_only = vk_true;

private object vk_format = 1;

private object vk_password = vk_missing;

private object vk_write_res_password = vk_missing;

private object vk_ignore_read_only_recommend = vk_true;

private object vk_origin = vk_missing;

private object vk_delimiter = vk_missing;

private object vk_editable = vk_false;

private object vk_notify = vk_false;

private object vk_converter = vk_missing;

private object vk_add_to_mru = vk_false;

private object vk_local = vk_false;

private object vk_corrupt_load = vk_false;
#endregion

#region CLOSE WORKBOOK VARIABLES

private object vk_save_changes = vk_false;

private object vk_route_workbook = vk_false;
#endregion

///

/// Vahe Karamian - 03/04/2005 - Excel Object Constructor.

///

public VkExcel()

{

this.startExcel();

}

///

/// Vahe Karamian - 03/04/2005 - Excel Object Constructor

/// visible is a parameter, either TRUE or FALSE, of type object.

///

/// Visible parameter, true for visible, false for non-visible

public VkExcel(bool visible)

{

this.vk_app_visible = visible;

this.startExcel();

}

...
In the above block, we have predefined some constants that will be used to open a given Excel file. To find out more about what each parameter represents or does, you should look into the documentation that comes with Excel.

We have two constructors: VkExcel() which by default will start Excel hidden, and the other VkExcel(bool visible) which gives you the option to specify if you would like to see the Excel application or not.

...

///

/// Vahe Karamian - 03/04/2005 - Start Excel Application

///
#region START EXCEL

private void startExcel()

{

if( this.excelApp == null )

{

this.excelApp = new Excel.ApplicationClass();

}

// Make Excel Visible

this.excelApp.Visible = this.vk_app_visible;

}
#endregion

///

/// Vahe Karamian - 03/23/2005 - Kill the current Excel Process

///
#region STOP EXCEL

public void stopExcel()

{

if( this.excelApp != null )

{

Process[] pProcess;

pProcess = System.Diagnostics.Process.GetProcessesByName("Excel");

pProcess[0].Kill();

}

}
#endregion

...
The above code starts and stops the Excel Application. startExcel() checks to see if the excelApp object is initialized or not, if it is then just make sure its visibility is set to the visible property. If not, it goes ahead and initializes the object for us. stopExcel() also checks to see if the object is currently in use, and if it is then it will go ahead and kill the process.

Note: pProcess[0].Kill() will make sure that Excel is gone for good! Some people that do Excel automation always complain that after they quit the application, Excel disappears but the Excel process is still in the task monitor, this code will take care of that for you!

...

///

/// Vahe Karamian - 03/09/2005 - Open File function for Excel 2003

/// The following function will take in a filename, and a password

/// associated, if needed, to open the file.

///
#region OPEN FILE FOR EXCEL

public string OpenFile(string fileName, string password)

{

vk_filename = fileName;

if( password.Length > 0 )

{

vk_password = password;

}

try

{

// Open a workbook in Excel

this.excelWorkbook = this.excelApp.Workbooks.Open(

fileName, vk_update_links, vk_read_only, vk_format, vk_password,

vk_write_res_password, vk_ignore_read_only_recommend, vk_origin,

vk_delimiter, vk_editable, vk_notify, vk_converter, vk_add_to_mru,

vk_local, vk_corrupt_load);

}

catch(Exception e)

{

this.CloseFile();

return e.Message;

}

return "OK";

}
#endregion

public void CloseFile()

{

excelWorkbook.Close( vk_save_changes, vk_filename, vk_route_workbook );

}

...
Alright, so the above code allows you to open Excel files. OpenFile(string fileName, string password) takes two parameters, the filename, or FULLNAME which is the path + filename, and a password parameter, which is used for protected sheets. Notice that the open function takes a bunch of parameters, which we have defined in the class. CloseFile() will goes ahead and closes the file.

Note: The code provided is for MS Excel 2003. For earlier versions, the parameters are a little different, you will need to check the documentation. If you need help on that send me an e-mail and I will try to help you out.

...

///

/// Vahe Karamian - 03/20/2005 - Get Excel Sheets

/// Get the collection of sheets in the workbook

///
#region GET EXCEL SHEETS

public void GetExcelSheets()

{

if( this.excelWorkbook != null )

{

excelSheets = excelWorkbook.Worksheets;

}

}

#region FIND EXCEL ATP WORKSHEET

{

string[] arrayS = this.ConvertToStringArray(array);

return arrayS;

}

...

GetRange(string range) is the function that actually retrieves the data from the Excel sheet and we convert the returned values into a string[]. This is done by the next function call: this.ConvertToStringArray(array). Then the string[] is passed back to the caller who can consume it in any way they want.

///
